I love watching family dynamics at sessions, how they interact, how they respond to each other, how they choose to pose themselves (with a little direction of course).

This is my second year in a row with this family, I am always honoured to be asked back again, so now I’m already looking forward to next years session. They are such a relaxed family, and the children really relaxed and got into the session, feeling so at ease in front of the camera.

Thank you for a wonderful session N family, I look forward to seeing you again, and I hope you enjoy your family portraits, just in time for Mother’s Day.

I thought I’d share a recent session of mine. Here are 5 gorgeous kids. The family and I meet at our location and had a beautiful afternoon in the sun. I enjoy getting to know each family member at my sessions, trying to work out what makes them tick, to get some insight into their being and capture this in their images.

This family was no exception. Thank you for a wonderful session C & B and I look forward seeing them all grow.

I processed this one a little different to my normal work, something just grabbed me and I went with it. She was in her own space so much and I wanted to portray that.

I’m a highly emotional human being. I’m drawn to emotion in everyday life, and I also like to capture real emotion at each of my sessions.

That look of wonder and love in mum’s eye at her family and how they have grown. That amazing, protective gaze from dad looking at his newborn child. That beautiful embrace between siblings which portray’s tenderness and connection. And laughter, lots of giggly laughter, as it really is the best medicine.

When I look at this portrait of a beautiful girl, I see her sharp wit, her inspiring sense of adventure and her amazing character written all over her beautiful face. All portrayed within her happy eyes and her laughing expression. There are so many I would like to share of her different expressions, but I will leave that for another time for my own reasons. But I will leave you with this to ponder,

How does this image make you feel?

A little excitement here in my studio space today.

I have some new samples to hang on the walls and show off to all and sundry. Nothing makes me happier than seeing beautiful prints on walls. Something amazing to look at and admire each time you walk past.

Here is a wall display which is a sight for sore (or quite content) eyes. This sample is a display of 3 X 12X12 inch square prints framed beautifully with a 1 inch matt on all sides. Yes, I’m now offering framed prints for my clients. I can’t believe I haven’t done this before, it makes complete sense really, no hanging around in boxes waiting to find time to send them off to the framer. Your beautiful prints, printed on art paper, fully framed with matt ready to hang on the wall. This is one of the reasons I love canvas so much, ready to hang, but now I might just start liking these more.

The frames are available in a number of colours and in my opinion have a simple elegance to them which will suit any decor.

Ask to see a sample at your session, you won’t be disappointed.

Beautifully finished off.

Wow, a blog post without a picture, but a link to one at least, so I think that is ok.

Just a quick post to share a link to my own portrait as taken by Ian Poole of Foto Frenzy. It is certainly something different to my usual self, but that is why I like it.

As a photographer, it is so important to get in front of the lens, instead of always being behind it, to experience what our clients do, the anticipation between preparing for the session, the session itself and then setting eyes on the result. Such an exciting process. Thanks Poole.

On that note, I hope you like it.

As a mother of 3, special time with one child is a rarity. And when I say, special time, I don’t mean the 5 minutes on the way home from school in the car where he tells me about his latest attempt on goal in the playground. I mean special, one on one time where you walk away with your heart in your mouth. I had this with my eldest boy today. He is that child that will bring your blood pressure to boiling point one moment and then melt your heart with his thoughtful ways and creative storytelling the next.

He makes my heart skip a beat.

I enjoyed this morning so much and came home to the rest of the family with such an energy it was amazing. I’ll forever keep this image special in my heart to remind me of those couple of hours spent with my boy and how precious they are.

We all need to have that time with our kids, one on one. I hear you say (and I have said, and I will say it again) who has the time. Well we don’t. But, it won’t wait for us, they will grow and that time will be gone. So make it happen. Feed the family cheese on toast one night and close the laptop to make it happen – the gourmet meal and the work emails will all be there waiting for us tomorrow.

Make the time to make it happen.

I rubbed shoulders with a group of amazing photographers a few weeks back. The annual Hair of the Dog by the AIPP in Queensland is a must do conference for me each year. It is at the beginning of the year (tick 1) so it kick starts me for the year, it is always packed with amazing speakers/workshops (tick 2) and I come away with copious notes from the day to revisit at other times in the year to keep me on track. One such speaker was Vicki Bell, a very talented photographer from Victoria and one of the biggest things I drew from her presentation was the need for a philosophy behind your work. I 100% agree with what she said, and although I have always felt I understood my own philosophy and what I want to portray in my work, putting it into words was a completely different story. So I have made that my challenge, to write it down and put it out there for the world to see. I am a firm believer in evolvement. As we evolve our ideals and our goals do also; benefit of experience I suppose! I’m sure that what I say now will be completely different to what I will say in 5 years time, so this will be a great test to see how it changes and how I have evolved as a photographer.

I believe good photography has many elements. Individually, these create a nice image; however together make an image that is compelling, entrancing and provoking. I believe my photography is primarily about 2 things – connection and light. These things are interrelated and dependent upon each other. That connection can exist between the subjects, between the subject and the photographer, or between the subject and their environment. Without the right light, the connection is lost to the viewer.

The photographer’s job is to understand the subject on such a level they understand how to bring out the best in the subject and capture it on film/pixels. For example a landscape photographer takes the time to understand a location. Which elements he/she would like to bring out and which time of day will provide the best light to do so. The same can be said for portraiture. Being a portraiture photographer, my aim is to utilise key photographic elements to bring out the best in people; to give them their moment, captured in time in a creative and visually enticing way. It is also to build a relationship with my subjects that allows me to capture this glimpse of their life and to create an image which reflects them as a person.

However, good photography doesn’t end there. For that moment captured in time, we need to determine what level of importance to place on it in our lives. Do we file it away on a hard drive for years down the track? Place it on a CD to be used as a coaster once it decides it magically cannot be read? Or, amazingly in this day of digital, we can lovingly prepare and print an image on an archival medium that will live on long after we have left in this world. We can hang this print in a place we walk by every day in our homes. We can marvel at the age of our children, at the colour of our hair and of the lack of wrinkles on our faces. And we can enjoy the emotional connection with a past moment, whether it was 1 month ago, 1 year ago or 15 years ago.

We can proudly say, that was us.

So, a little more than a philosophy statement. But hopefully it gives you an understanding of what my images mean, to me and to the person in front of the lens, and gives you a little insight into why I do what I do.

Thank you Vicki for being so thought provoking. It was an interesting process and one I will no doubt do again as my photography journey continues.
